HYPEREALISM PORTRAITS
Dolly Parton

During a two-week period in between jobs, I decided to sculpt another icon.
With Dolly Parton, the hardest part was finding consistent facial references! There were so many photos of her to sort through at various ages, with different makeup, not to mention different amounts of lip filler, that it was a challenge to line up consistent reference views. Here's an image of my sculpting process and I toggled between the sculpt and the reference:

This was also my very first foray into Arnold lookdev. I used a complex lighting set up (that nearly fried my CPU!) to try to get more accurate with the skin subsurface scattering depth, as well as to further analyze the 3D forms of her face in various lighting conditions.
Because I was limiting myself to a strict two-week deadline for this portrait, I found it very helpful to give myself drawover notes. Here you can see part of my process as I iterated on the versions of Dolly compared to some of my reference.

And finally, I found it incredibly important to take extreme care when it came to Dolly's iconic hair. I learned so much about Xgen during this process, having remade Dolly's hair three times to achieve the right feathery layers.
